Here is a list of books that I would recommend anyone interested in pursuing Yoga seriously should read.At the bottom of the page are Yoga mat recommendations.
In the West the practice of Yoga Asanas is widely believed to be "doing Yoga," however, the practice of Asanas or Hatha Yoga is only one tiny part of what Yoga is all about.
The books listed below should further open out the meaning of Yoga to all.
They are in no particular order.
I have also included a number of books on spirituality which I found deeply enriching. If there is something you would like to discuss, share, or a book you would recommend, please drop me a line. All I know is I have read these books and my thirst for knowledge goes on.
Yoga is a journey, and I can't help but feel, I have only taken the first few steps.
God talks with Arjuna-The Bhagavad Gita by Paramahansa Yogananda
This gigantic two volume commentary is the best I have read to date.
It is a magnificent and powerful book and I highly recommend it to anyone who really wants to understand what Yoga is all about.Full of insights on religion and life.I treasured every page I read and found it extremely nourishing.

Yoga Mats
I have tried most and all except a very few are slippery contrary to being called "Sticky Mats"
On top of that they are about as environmentally friendly as a 747.
The undisputed winner and the ones I use personally are the Manduka range of real rubber mats.
Their original Black Mat is the best and most suited to practicing at home because it is thick and quite heavy.
The new Manduka "Purple Lite" is almost as good but much lighter and therefore easier to carry around.
The rest of the mats out there are pretty hopeless and one wonders how much time the people selling them, actually spent practising on their products.Any perspiration and they turn into portable ice skating rinks!
Bear in mind most of the Yoga mats out there contain PVC which is not good to be exposed to skin for long periods of time.
PVC is toxic yet so many Yoga manufacturers are using it!Profits before principle?
